If Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has taught us anything, it is that lockdowns and masks do exactly nothing to stop the spread of COVID-19. The state of Michigan has some of the most strict lockdowns in the nation and is still struggling with record-setting daily death tolls and hospitalizations. And while Gov. Whitmer has proudly bragged about following all orders from Dr. Fauci, Biden’s top medical advisor, it’s becoming clearly evident that none of it has stopped the spread of coronavirus. It’s only managed to hurt small businesses and schools in the process.
Gov. Whitmer is now doubling down on her COVID-19 restrictions and has issued an order that young children aged 2 to 4 years must wear a mask when participating in gatherings or in public. The mask mandate had previously exempt children under 2 but expanded its requirement after a surging COVID-19 infection and hospitalization rates in Michigan.
The order came from Elizabeth Hertel, who heads the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. She was heavily criticized after taking a spring break vacation in Alabama. Tricia Foster, a top Whitmer aide, also just returned from a vacation in Siesta Key, Florida. Both government officials took their vacations shortly after Gov. Whitmer warned people not to travel for spring break.
Gov. Whitmer was questioned about the double standards of government workers and replied, “What directors do on their personal time is their business, so long as they are safe.” Seems like there are different rules for top officials than for the American people.
The new order also maintains the 50% capacity limit on indoor dining, as well as a 15-person limit on indoor residential gatherings with no more than three households. They called it a “good faith effort” to ensure that children wear masks while in gatherings at childcare facilities or camps. The order also expanded testing requirements for youth sports. It will be in effect through May 24.
On a recent segment of MSNBC, the governor talked about Michigan’s current COVID-19 surge and whether or not she has the “political ability” to shut the state down again. She boasted about having some of the “strongest protocols in place” despise virus cases that continue to grow.
So far, we’ve analyzed that the open states, such as Texas and Mississippi, have lower cases and the strict lockdown states have seen a rise in cases. What science are the Democrats following? Gov. Whitmer also blamed the Trump Administration for not deploying the resources her state needed to handle the pandemic. It’ll be 2024 and Democrats will still be blaming things on Trump.
“I was sued by the Republican legislature here in Michigan. I lost in the Supreme Court. It was a Republican-dominated Supreme Court. I lost some of those executive powers. We do retain some powers, but we are so incredibly divided after, I think, the politics of the last 14 months,” Gov. Whitmer said.
Emily Myers, director of Ferndale Montessori Center, said that the director’s order for children as young as 2 to wear masks will be “difficult” since some families are supportive of the mask mandates and other kids are not used to it. She said some kids sneeze inside the masks and others put wood chips in them, resulting in two to three masks being used throughout the day. Most importantly, Myers emphasized that learning has been challenging for younger students since they can’t see an adult’s mouth to learn sounds and language.
“The way they are learning expressive language is taking longer. They can’t see faces. They can’t see if you are smiling,” Myers said.
What’s the point of getting vaccinated if we aren’t “virus-free” and still have to act like it’s 2020? The power grab is clearly evident under Gov. Whitmer’s hold and it’s time for her to let the people go. The people do not belong to the government, the government belongs to the people. Masks haven’t worked for quite some time now and it’s clearly evident in her state that they don’t work. You can’t punish toddlers over political play.
