When it comes to the most powerful Dem figures in politics, it is always “do as I say and not as I do.” And President Joe Biden, one of the most powerful politicians in the world, is practicing the same thing when it comes to masks.
Even though he has been a strong advocate for mask-wearing practices and vaccine mandates, President Biden was seen walking around maskless after dining at Washington, D.C’s Michelin star restaurant, Fiola Mare DC. The extravagant restaurant even sells an ounce of Royal Oscietra caviar for $250.
This is shortly after Biden extended the mask mandate for the Transportation Security Administration until January 18, 2022. The mask mandate for mass transit travelers has been challenged in the courts by Florida resident Lucas Wall, who said the president cannot implement mask mandates to travel.
But Biden has continued to push back against states banning mask mandates. He said he would not sit by as governors try to intimidate and block educators from “protecting our children.” He has emphasized many times that the U.S Department of Education has every right to enforce authority and implement mask guidelines into the classroom.
Washington D.C has been under a mask mandate since July 31, in which everyone (including fully vaccinated people) are to wear masks when entering grocery stores, restaurants, and bars. The only time residents are allowed to remove their masks is while eating and drinking.
Biden was first caught walking around maskless when photographed by Instagram user Pauline Garris Brown, who posted a picture of him smiling at a woman. She captioned the photo, “48 hours in D.C…and look who I just ran into.”
The RNC research Twitter account also posted a video of the president leaving the restaurant with a mask in his hand. Many social media users asked if there were any “Brandon chants” in the restaurant, which is a reference to the “F*** Joe Biden” chant that was relabeled into Let’s Go, Brandon. Another mockingly remarked, “Masks are for peasants.”
One person even pointed out that the serving staff should’ve refused to serve the unmasked president, as DC restaurant staff have refused former President Donald Trump over his policies in the past.
Biden isn’t the only politician breaking the rules in D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was also seen maskless and celebrating at a large wedding just a day after announcing the mandate in the city. She officiated a very large wedding after implementing the indoor mask mandate and amid an “alarming surge” in new COVID-19 infections driven by the Delta variant.
John Hopkins Epidemiologist David Dowdy pointed out the problems in running for office and advocating for a certain policy while acting the opposite. This isn’t the first time Bowser has been seen breaking COVID-19 guidelines either, as she celebrated Biden’s win in Delaware back in November, even though the state had been on her “travel restriction” list. She excused the celebration as “essential travel” for government work, even though many called into question what she actually did on the trip.
Others argued that the point of a mandate is to create structure and “something serious” for everyone else in the room. Even the Fiola Mare restaurant, where Biden and the first lady ate, states on its website that masks are required. Rules for thee, but not for me.
