Alternatives To Immigration Detention Are Deeply Flaws & Poorly Timed

Today, the Biden administration announced that illegal aliens captured at Mexico’s border will be placed under house arrest in two of the largest U.S. cities. To reduce costs and make more space in immigration detention centers.

Alternatives To Detention (ATD) include ankle bracelet monitoring, house arrest and catch and release policies.

To start the “Home Curfew”, immigration authorities will immediately place 100-200 illegal aliens under house arrest in Houston and Baltimore. To begin the “Home Curfew”, immigration authorities will immediately place 100-200 illegal aliens in Houston and Baltimore under house arrest.

ICE agents wouldn’t be able to arrest or remove participants from programs even if they had the ability to monitor them effectively. This is precisely why ICE’s total deportation and arrest numbers dropped to an all time low in the fiscal year 2018.

Another problem in ATD programs is the illegal aliens who exploit them to avoid being prosecuted. Only 13% illegal aliens were freed by President Biden’s catch-and-release policies.

A Congressional Research Service report revealed that ATD enrollees are subjected to immigration judges prioritizing cases in detention. They may have to wait for years before their cases are heard.

Many ATD programs require enrollees wear electronic ankle bracelets to prove compliance. Experts who are familiar with the devices say they do not deter but can sometimes be cut off.

ATD programs do not address the problem of illegal aliens crossing the southern border in record numbers. This has led to an overcrowded detention area.

Illegal aliens know it’s much easier to illegally enter the United States. Memorandums by Alejandro Mayorkas, Homeland Security Secretary, make it nearly impossible to have someone removed from the country if they cross the southern border.

Executive orders could allow the Biden administration to expand the southern border detention area. While detention costs more than ATD programs, it is less expensive than detention.

The pilothouse arrest program implemented by the Biden administration raises serious concern. They don’t address the root causes of illegal entry into the United States. American citizens have patience.
