Monday’s announcement by Sweden’s prime Minister was that “we will inform NATO about our desire to join the alliance”, as Russia’s war against Ukraine is approaching the 3-month mark. Senator Republican Mitch McConnell has promised that Congress will approve Sweden’s application quickly.
Monday’s speech by Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson to legislators stated that “We will inform NATO we want to be a member of this alliance.” “Sweden requires formal security guarantees that are part of NATO membership.”
Andersson described it as “a historic shift” in Sweden’s security policies.
McConnell spoke in Stockholm Monday to say that while other members of the Western alliance might be able approve Sweden’s application earlier, he has no doubt it will get approved by the U.S. Congress by August.
McConnell stated that “We anticipate moving this fast – in an even more rapid fashion than previous applications for NATO.”
In support of the region’s battle against Russian aggression and its invasion of Ukraine, the minority leader visited the region along with a delegation consisting of Republican senators.
