Texas Governor Greg Abbott Says The Status Quo Is Unacceptable

Texas Governor Greg Abbott addressed a press conference at Uvalde Elementary School in Texas. Where an 18-year-old with a rifle committed atrocities against 19 children and two teachers.

Abbott was accompanied by Don McLaughlin (Uvalde Mayor), who announced that all funerals for those who died at the hands of the shooter would be covered. He also stated that the community will have access to mental health services for anyone who requests them.

There is also a site that has been set up where donations can be made that go straight to the people of Uvalde called onestarfoundation.org.

Abbott was asked questions after announcements were made regarding the resources directed towards Uvalde. Abbot was initially asked if he knew that officers waited an hour before moving on to the shooter. Abbott admitted that the initial information he was given about the shooting was incorrect. He stated that he was recalling what was given to him right from the beginning and that he is now “livid” that he was misled.

Greg Abbott claims that he was misled by Uvalde police officers about the shooting. He claims that he was not told by officers that they stood in the hallway for over an hour as the shooting took place.

Abbott also promised that law enforcement would gain the trust of the public starting at this point, which includes an in-depth investigation of everything that occurred in Uvalde.

One reporter wanted to know if any legislation Abbott had signed, such as constitutional carry, would be repealed. Abbott stated that none of the laws he signed in the previous session were to be merged with those that were violated by the shooter. He made it clear that the new laws would address gun crime, mental health, school safety, and healthcare.

Abbott stated that “The status quo” was unacceptable. This crime is unacceptable. We are not going to be talking about it and doing nothing about it. We’ll be searching for the best laws to make our schools and communities safer.

Abbott made it clear that Texas healthcare would continue to be focused on mental health.
