Trump-Endorsed Candidate Dan Cox Defeats Hogan Pick in Maryland GOP Gubernatorial Primary

According to The Associated Press, Maryland has a Republican gubernatorial candidate. This will replace Larry Hogan, the GOP Governor who is term-limited.

Donald Trump endorsed Dan Cox, a far-right state legislator. To become Maryland governor, he won Tuesday’s Republican primary. He defeated Larry Hogan, a moderate opponent who was backed by the Governor.

Cox will face the winner of the Democratic primaries during the November general election.

The Hill:

Cox cited the experiences he had as a small businessman and state delegate, and as a constitutional lawyer. He lost to Sen. Jamie Raskin (D).

Kelly Schulz was in the meantime. Her experiences as former commerce and labor secretary were praised, as well as her time with the Maryland House of Delegates.

A former Hogan administration official’s campaign platform consisted of supporting law enforcement and encouraging parents to take part in the education curriculum. It also included fighting tax increases. Cox’s platform contained his anti-abortion position and support for Second Amendment rights.

The race was seen as a match-up between the endorsers. We previously wrote about it. Cox, however, was also a state delegate and had his own battles with the governor.

Donald Trump criticized Larry Hogan for implementing statewide lockdowns during a COVID-19 epidemic on Tuesday, the day prior to the Maryland GOP primary.

Cox and Hogan were known to have argued during the COVID-19 epidemic. Cox filed a lawsuit against Hogan and filed a resolution to impeachment.

The former president released a statement about the race — and Hogan — Monday night, which read, in part: “Maryland, tomorrow is a big day. Get out and vote for Dan Cox for Governor … Get rid of Shutdown RINO Larry Hogan who is trying to get another RINO into office, Kelly Schulz.”
