Nancy Pelosi, House Speaker, is getting criticized on social media for remarks she made on Thursday about her “connection” to China. Pelosi stated that China has always been a special place in her heart because of a childhood memory.

Pelosi stated that “When I was little, I was told by a beach attendant that if I dug deep enough, we could reach China.”

Pelosi made this comment while on a trip to Indo-Pacific.

Pelosi traveled to the Indo-Pacific over the past week. She stopped in Taiwan Tuesday despite numerous threats from China telling her not to.

Pelosi stated in a statement that “our visit to Taiwan is one of many Congressional delegations to Taiwan – and it in no manner contradicts longstanding United States policies, guided by U.S.-China Joint Communiques, and the Six Assurances.” The United States will continue to resist unilateral attempts to alter the status quo.
