During a reception hosted by the Democrat Governors Association at a private residence in Washington, D.C., the president returned to one of his favourite talking points regarding the future of democracy under threat from populist-nationalist politicians.

Biden officials privately worry that Meloni could signal a shift in power from the leftist global elites towards a more populist, conservative political future in Europe like the current movements in Poland and Hungary.

Biden talked about how important it was to elect Democrat governors, as they would be in control of the future state elections.

The president also reexamined the conversation with Xi Jinping, the leader of China’s Communist party, about the virtues and vices of democracy and autocracy.
