Democrats Should Worry About Republicans Gaining Latino Voters

In an editorial published by Bloomberg, editors warned Democrats last Friday that Republicans could gain ground with Latino voters. This is a group they used to take for granted.

“As much Democrats may want to celebrate last week’s midterm election results — one the better recent outcomes — they can’t overlook the drubbing in Florida, which has long been a purple-colored battleground that is now solid red,” wrote the editors.

They added that the party could lose the third-most populous country in the future if it doesn’t make a quick assessment of the causes.

DeSantis won reelection in Florida by almost 20 points, more than the Democrat Governor. Gavin Newsom won the Blue-heavy State of California. This huge victory was attributed by the Bloomberg editors to the Republican Party’s sudden appeal among Latino voters, especially immigrants from countries like Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

The editors wrote that Governor Ron DeSantis was reelected with Senator Marco Rubio easily, and both were beaten in Miami-Dade. This is the state’s most populous County, home to 2.7 million people, of which more than two-thirds are Hispanic.

They added that “They underlined an awkward tendency: Democrats’ brand among Latino voters in Florida is collapsing — and shows worrisome sign nationwide.”

It turns out that Latino voters loved DeSantis’s decision to send a plane full Venezuelan migrants to Martha’s Vineyard’s liberal elite.

They added that this should serve as a reminder to Democrats that Hispanics don’t exist in a single group and that immigration is not their main concern. According to a recent survey, immigration was ranked ninth in Latinos’ concerns. It trails education, violence, and the like. Democrats must stop taking Latinos for granted, and instead focus on the things they care about.

Bloomberg editors also criticised Democrats and the woke left over the misuse of the much-disliked term Latinx, which Latino voters have consistently rejected, according to all polls.

“Democrats need to stop taking Latinos as a given and focus on what they really care about in order to reverse these trends,” the editors wrote. The editors gave an example: “Latinx” is a common term used by party professionals, but adopted only by 3% of Hispanics.”

The editors concluded that Democrats must prioritize Latino voters, or else they will “write off one the most valuable prizes on the Electoral College Map.”
