Highly Populated Oregon County Dropping Charges Against Hundreds of People Accused of Various Crimes

Mike Schmidt, leftist Multnomah County District Attorney, stated that hundreds of drunk drivers and husband-beaters are not facing justice in Oregon. This is because there are no public defense attorneys.

Schmidt announced Monday that a Multnomah County Circuit Judge dismissed the first 300 cases in February because there were no defense attorneys. I objected to the victim’s rights.

A fervent BLM advocate stated, “Judges have dismissed all cases hearings since then,” which means that the accused criminals are being released.

Schmidt said that there is a lack of public defenders capable of providing counsel to defendants. Schmidt stated, “Courts can release defendants without bail or conditions. ”

Schmidt reports on the release of the suspect, who was alleged to have driven a car into school buses carrying children.

Between Feb. 24 and Oct. 31, 285 felony and misdemeanor cases were dismissed, including:

• 139 cases prosecuted by the A/B Unit, which deals with felonies, including property crimes and human trafficking offenses;
• 43 cases prosecuted by Unit C, which deals with major felonies, including vehicular assaults and gang-related offenses;
• 11 cases prosecuted by Unit D, which tackles felony assault cases;
  Five cases (two assaults, one strangulation, one criminal mischief, and one coercion) were prosecuted by the DV Unit, which deals with domestic violence cases;
• One Multi-Disciplinary Team unit child abuse case; and
• Six District Court Trial cases, dealing with misdemeanors that accompanied felonies as lesser charges.

80 of the property crime charges dismissed due to a lack of counsel were car thefts.

Nine assaults, six robberies, three hit-and-run felonies, and other personal crimes will go unpunished.

Two individuals who failed to register as sex offenders were also let off.

11 days after being elected district attorney with the help of the scandal-plagued radical Shaun King, Schmidt made a name for himself by refusing to prosecute BLM rioters.

Schmidt’s office dropped charges in nearly 90% of cases related to riots, according to KOIN.

Multnomah County still has to deal with the effects of this soft-on-crime approach. Schmidt isn’t changing his ways which is a problem.

Fox News reported on the financial ruin of the Portland Police Bureau by the city council. The bureau has struggled to keep pace with increasing crime since the BLM Riots.

Portland had 90 homicides in the last year. This is 24 more than in 1987.

Neighborhood Scout gives Portland a score of three on its crime index. 100 is the safest. One in 187 people is likely to be the victim of violent crime. The odds of being a victim in Oregon’s Democratic-controlled state are 1 in 187.

Schmidt was a former skeptic who didn’t want to pursue certain crimes. However, he now feels he cannot make the right decision due to the complexity of the criminal justice process. This system is being constrained by increased crime and insufficient public defense.

Schmidt stated in an opinion piece in The Oregonian published on March 27 that defense attorneys and prosecutors are all linked in the complex chain of the criminal justice system. Each link in the chain is showing signs of extreme stress and is quickly approaching breaking point.

Schmidt said that Schmidt was seeing lawyers being forced to quit his office because of “the crushing workloads caused by the pandemic, where cases are up to 30% more than usual. ”

The District Attorney claimed that the case count was up despite Schmidt’s low confidence in the police who he allegedly refers only a small portion of crimes to him.

Schmidt stated, “To crime victims in our community that justice is not available” and that they will not be treated for their harm, the inability of convicting criminals sends a message.

Schmidt stated, “It also sends a message to individuals who were convicted of a criminal offense are not accountable while police and prosecutor resources remain limited.” “This crisis continues to be a threat to public security every day.

Schmidt suggested transparency, rather than offering a solution. His office would publish all cases that were set aside or dismissed in this crisis until it is solved.
