Several outlets reported that Brittney Griner, a WNBA star and I loosely use the term “star”, had been released from a Russian prison to exchange for Viktor Bout.

According to CNN, Bout was a former Soviet military officer, who is now serving a 25-year sentence in the United States. His crimes include plotting to kill Americans, obtaining and transporting anti-aircraft missiles, and supporting terrorist organizations. In 2011, he was convicted.

Although Griner’s sentence is unfair, it seems that Griner was being traded for a Russian terrorist. This trade is similar to Barack Obama’s famous swap of five Taliban terrorists for American deserter Bowe Berdahl.

This swap is particularly unfair considering that Paul Whelan (a former Marine who was unjustly held in Russia since 2018) is currently serving a 16-year sentence for espionage.
