Several outlets reported that Brittney Griner, a WNBA star and I loosely use the term “star”, had been released from a Russian prison to exchange for Viktor Bout.
According to CNN, Bout was a former Soviet military officer, who is now serving a 25-year sentence in the United States. His crimes include plotting to kill Americans, obtaining and transporting anti-aircraft missiles, and supporting terrorist organizations. In 2011, he was convicted.
However, the Phoenix Mercury, Griner’s team, has their center back. Joe Biden is as happy as a child with an ice cream cone.
Griner pleaded guilty to drug charges. She was accused of having cannabis vaping supplies in her bag. Griner was sentenced to nine-year imprisonment and forced labor camps. Although Griner’s sentence is unfair, it seems that Griner was being traded for a Russian terrorist. This trade is similar to Barack Obama’s famous swap of five Taliban terrorists for American deserter Bowe Berdahl.
This swap is particularly unfair considering that Paul Whelan (a former Marine who was unjustly held in Russia since 2018) is currently serving a 16-year sentence for espionage.
Biden stated that “this was not a choice over which American to bring home.” “Sadly, and for completely illegitimate purposes, Russia is treating Paul’s case differently to Brittney’s. We aren’t giving up, even though we haven’t yet been able to secure Paul’s release. We won’t give up.”
Biden inspires little confidence.
