Meta announced that Donald Trump’s Instagram and Facebook accounts will be restored.
After Facebook falsely claimed that Trump incited the Capitol Riot on January 6, 2021, Trump was removed from all social media platforms. The ban was upheld by Facebook’s Oversight Board in May 2021 despite the absence of evidence that Trump was involved in the riot.
According to Nick Clegg (president of Meta’s global affairs), the accounts will be reinstated in the next few weeks. Clegg said that the reinstatement will include “new guardrails in order to deter repeat offenses”, which include “heightened penalties to repeat offenses — penalties that will apply to all public figures whose accounts have been reinstated from suspensions relating to civil unrest according to our updated protocol.”
Clegg said, “In case Mr. Trump posts any further violating material, the content will not be removed and he’ll be suspended for between one and two years depending on the severity of the violation.”
