LaToya Cantrell, New Orleans Mayor, reacted strongly to allegations that she had an extramarital affair. This suggests that the accusations are unfounded and a product of sexism.
NOLA.com reports that Cantrell allegedly sent a text message to one of the reporters Wednesday in an attempt to counter what she called “false allegations.”
Cantrell wrote, “By the end of my tenure as mayor, I would have slept in half the City of New Orleans based upon false accusations that come to my way sometimes every day.” “This is just one of them.”
Cantrell said in a follow up text that he told the reporter “If I was a MAN, you wouldn’t be texting me regarding this bull—t.”
Fox News Digital reached out to NOLA and the Mayor’s Office for clarification but they did not immediately respond.
After an investigation into irregularities with his pay, Jeffrey Vappie, New Orleans Police Department Officer was fired from Cantrell’s security team. Vappie was found to have worked long hours on days when he wasn’t assigned to the mayor’s details or days when she had very little.
Vappie’s wife filed a new divorce petition. It alleges that Vappie admitted to having an “adulterous affair.” L.C.” L.C.”
Vappie’s spouse filed the divorce papers after WVUE ran a segment that examined several cases in which Cantrell and Vappie were alleged to have spent hours together at an apartment owned by the city. Now, she believes that Cantrell was a contributing factor to her marital turmoil.
Divorce filings list 10 dates between August 2022 and September 2022 when Vappie was with “L.C.” Vappie and “L.C.” were in a sexual relationship. Vappie’s wife says that Cantrell and her marriage began in May and continues to this very day.
This scandal involving the mayor occurs at an especially difficult time. Cantrell is currently being recalled in New Orleans.
The recall organizers have criticized Cantrell for his record-breaking crime rates and understaffed police and EMS units, government inefficiency and corruption allegations, as well as the poor infrastructure.
With just five weeks to gather over 20,000 signatures, the recall is facing a steep climb. Political analysts believe that the required number to start a recall is even greater, with some signatures being discarded due to errors.
This isn’t the first scandal to rock a U.S. female mayor.
After it became clear that Megan Barry, the Nashville mayor, was having an affair in 2018, Barry resigned. She pleaded guilty in a case regarding the misuse of overtime hours she used to travel with the officer.
