Ronna McDaniel, the Republican National Committee Chairwoman, defeated two challengers to her seat to win re-election. She will also be the candidate to lead the party into the 2024 elections. At a luxurious resort in Dana Point (California), she faced off against Harmeet Dhillon, an attorney, and Mike Lindell, a MyPillow founder. The vote was not close. McDaniel won 111 votes. Donald Trump selected Romney in 2017 to lead the party. She will now serve her fourth and final two-year term.
RNC races are often insider games with establishment types preside. But Dhillon campaigned for the party and gave McDaniel a run for their money. She pointed out McDaniel’s poor results in the previous three election cycles and complained about the RNC’s wasteful spending.
Romney’s niece, moderate Sen. Mitt Romney will continue to lead the party, which is fractured and could very easily be headed to another contentious primary depending on who decides to run for President. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, and a few other Republican luminaries are thought to be contenders. DeSantis, who appeared to support Dhillon on Thursday, said that the party needed “new blood” and congratulated McDaniel for Truth social shortly after the results were announced.
The RNC hasn’t paid much attention to election integrity over the past few years. But, McDaniel may have been inspired by the challenges presented by Dhillon or Lindell. We’ll see.
