Ocasio-Cortez Explodes Over Vote To Boot Omar, Slaps Notebook Against Podium

Published on

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), angrily reacted to a vote to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

To her fellow Democrats in New York, the lawmaker stated that the GOP was “targeting women” by voting to remove Omar. Republicans claimed this was due to Omar’s past antisemitic remarks and anti-American comments.

Ocasio-Cortez also accused GOP of hypocrisy in elevating Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) to high-profile committee assignments, despite her history of controversial statements regarding Jewish people.

After her speaking time was over, the congresswoman hit her notebook against the podium.

Ocasio Cortez, a member of the party-line 218-211, voted to remove Omar from the committee. She passionately repudiated the “disgusting” legacy of “targeting Muslims Americans and racism after 9/11.

She stated, “I believe one of the things we should discuss here is also one of our disgusting legacies following 9/11 — has been targeting and racism against Muslim Americans throughout America.”

Ocasio-Cortez said, “And that is an extension of that heritage!”

The House Republicans claimed that the vote was consistent with their previous position regarding the behavior of the Minnesota Democrat. Ocasio Cortez also spoke out about a “threat” to her life by a former member of Congress, Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), who was censured in 2021 after sharing a meme that featured anime cartoon characters killing each other and included AOC’s likeness. Omar was criticized for using antisemitic tropes such as the assertion that pro-Israeli members were paid for and bought by the lobbying group American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

“Consistency? “Consistency?” Ocasio Cortez stated that a Republican Caucus member threatened my life, and that the Republican Caucus awarded him one of the most prestigious congressional assignments in Congress.

She swore angrily that she was not being inconsistent. Do not tell me this is about condemning antisemitic remarks, when you have a Republican caucus member who has spoken about Jewish space lasers as well as a whole lot of tropes. She was also promoted to the highest committee assignments within this body!

Ocasio-Cortez stated, at the end of her speech, that this was about targeting women of color in America. You don’t have to tell me that I did not receive a single apology for my life being threatened.

As she was about to walk off, the congresswoman smacked a notepad against the lectern.

Ocasio-Cortez’s critics were critical of her use of color. They pointed out that White men such as Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) had been removed from their committees when Republicans won the majority.
