Chicago police officer died in a shootout with an unknown suspect. He was shot and killed right in front of children at school.
FOX Chicago reported that Officer Andres Vasquez–Lasso (32), was shot multiple times while chasing an armed suspect near Sawyer Elementary School.
A woman who spoke on condition of anonymity said that there were many children involved because the incident occurred in front of the school. They go there to have fun. We thought it was safe so we let them play there. Now it has changed.”
According to her, Vazquez Lasso was playing with her 10-year-old sibling when the suspect pulled a gun on Vazquez. According to the woman, they heard gunfire and ran as fast as possible to escape danger.
Two police cars responded in response to a domestic call in the 5200 blocks of South Spaulding Avenue at 4:45 pm. According to Police Superintendent David O., a caller claimed that a suspect was following a woman with a gun. Brown spoke to reporters.
One officer knocked at the door to see if the call had been made. The suspect was pursued by a second officer, who engaged him in a fight.
Vazquez–Lasso fired back and shot the suspect, aged 18, in the head. Police said Wednesday that the suspect is still in critical condition. He was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center where he later died.
He was married with a young child. Police said that the suspect had been arrested once before, but they have not released any information about him.
