Twitter announced recently that Elon Musk’s Twitter will end its legacy verification system. Users’ blue checkmarks will be removed if they don’t subscribe to the Twitter Blue subscription.
NBC News reports that Twitter will be ending its legacy verification system, which provided blue checksmarks to authentic accounts that were in the public interest and were deemed genuine. On Thursday, the social media company announced that it will phase out its old system starting April 1. Twitter Blue, the subscription service that was launched last year, is now the platform’s verification system.
The verification program was initially created for celebrities, journalists, government officials, journalists and other notable Twitter users. However, it was inconsistent and biased towards conservatives. It was prohibited to verify news feeds, fan accounts and parodies. The new Twitter Blue system, however, will not require accounts to be accepted from leftist Silicon Valley employees in order to receive a blue check mark.
Twitter Blue costs $8 per month and allows users to edit or delete tweets. Elon Musk, the CEO of the company, announced the subscription service shortly after acquiring Twitter in October. Musk claims that Twitter Blue will increase revenue and reduce trolling. People were using the blue checkmarks to impersonate brands and celebrities, which caused the service to be temporarily suspended. However, it was relaunched in December.
The sudden change in verification requirements might not be as important as initially thought, despite the fact that it has changed. Musk assured Twitter users that anyone “affiliated to a verified organisation” would be verified via a tweet on Friday morning. This means that many Twitter professionals might retain their verification checks or receive new ones due to the system update.
It is not clear how the switch to Twitter Blue, a subscription-based verification system, will impact the platform’s user experience or the perception of the blue checkmarks.
