AI Will Make Humans More Creative, Not Replace Them, Predict Entertainment Executives

Concerns about the impact of generative artificial intelligent on the entertainment industry, and the jobs it creates, have increased. This has even contributed to a Hollywood writer’s strike. The founders of Web3 Animation studio Toonstar, however, have used artificial intelligence for years in their studio and told Fox News Digital that it is an aid to the creative process.

Luisa Huang is the COO and founder of Toonstar. She told Fox News Digital that AI can “unlock” creativity and give animators “a head start” when it comes to creativity. She added, “I haven’t seen AI produce anything that is ready for the production.”

“What AI can do is synthesize the process in order to give you a starting point. AI is an incredible tool. “The starting point of creation has just moved upward,” Huang said.

John Attanasio is the CEO and cofounder of Toonstar. He said that AI can “supercharge” humans by eliminating mundane tasks and allowing them more time to focus on “pure creative activities”.

Attanasio & Huang are putting AI to work in their own works. The studio released Space Junk last week, which was the first animated series to feature a voice that is generated by AI.

Thematically, we thought it was a great idea, since it is a robot character. Why not have a robotic voice for a robot? Attansio said.

But despite its use of AI in the production of full-length films, the company believes that the technology can replace the human creators.

Attansio stated, “There is no button you can push to make Harry Potter appear.” Do we think that an AI will be involved in Toy Story 2? Definitely. We don’t believe it will be possible without the human contribution and human interaction.”

Huang said that “storytelling is going to be… a matter of point of view” at the end. He compared using AI to make full-length movies to shooting films on an iPhone.

She said that anyone can use their iPhone to film videos, but feature films are not made on iPhones.

Attansio, and Huang, are both optimistic about artificial intelligence’s use in the creative process. However they believe that its use should be regulated.

Attansio warned that there should be safeguards in place to prevent the use of creators’ works to train large-scale language models.

Writers Guild members are currently on strike over concerns that AI could replace writers.

The WGA wrote in March that “the WGA’s proposed regulation to regulate the use of material produced by artificial intelligence or similar technology ensures that the Companies cannot use AI to undermine the writers’ working standards, including compensation, residuals and separated rights, credits.”
