Microsoft reports that Volt Typhoon, a Chinese state-sponsored actor, is targeting critical infrastructure in the United States.
Microsoft announced in a post on Wednesday that it had “uncovered stealthy, targeted malicious activities focused on credential access after compromise and network system detection aimed at critical Infrastructure Organizations in the United States.”
Micrsofot stated that “the attack was carried out by Volt Typhoon.” Volt Typhoon, a Chinese actor sponsored by the Chinese government, focuses on “espionage” and “information gathering”.
Microsoft assesses this campaign with moderate confidence, and is developing capabilities that can disrupt the critical communications infrastructure between United States and Asia during future crises.
