Paige Hutchinson is the campaign manager for Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX). Hutchinson says that a recording in which Allred suggests it would have been better if the Second Amendment hadn’t been written, was “highly edited.”
VERDICT: False. Allred comments on the viability and interpretation of the Second Amendment. He also expresses his belief that gun controls can be implemented even if the Second Amendment is in place.
Allred, a former NFL football player who has become a politician and is currently serving in his third term at the U.S. House of Representatives, announced his bid for U.S. Senate this week.
Breitbart reported Friday on a 2018 recording by Allred. He describes any attempt to repeal the Second Amendment in the United States as being out of touch with the reality. However, he suggests that things would have been better if the Second Amendment hadn’t been written.
Allred, the challenger to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), was recorded and published in 2018 by Congressional Republicans. She said, “Within accurately applied Second Amendment we can do all we want, as far regulating weapons and everything else.”
He continued:
In the second sentence of the Second Amendment, it states that “well-regulated” militias and “the right for arms to be kept and to bear them shall not infringed upon.” There are two ideas, but the current trend is to only focus on the right to carry arms and ignore the part about well-regulated militias. I think that we should apply it correctly.
Would it have been better if it had not been written? It would have been better if it had not been written. There’s no way we could repeal any of the Bill of Rights Amendments. This is not possible in the United States. What we could do is, I believe, that there’s enough room to prevent people from having “weapons” of war.
FOX News reported Allred’s anti-2nd Amendment comments. They cited the recording that Breitbart News had “resurfaced.”
Paige Hutchison’s campaign manager responded to FOX Digital by saying that “a highly edited clip from 6 years ago does not accurately reflect Allred’s view.”
