The chaos and fear that accompanied the death of a tribal member in Arizona’s Tohono O’odham Nation was horrifying. I was in shock. I could not imagine what I had heard.

CPB confirmed on Thursday that agents from its Ajo Border Patrol Station were involved in the fatal shooting of the Tohono O’odham reservation. A thorough inquiry is underway, but there has been no public release of further information. CBP and tribal officers are also involved.

Ned Norris Jr., the tribal chairman of American Wire, said:

Raymond Mattia was a Nation member who lost his life in this incident. As the investigation continues, we expect that all facts will be considered, and public safety agencies will act appropriately and promptly. At this time, the investigation is ongoing. There will be no further comments made at this stage because the investigation has not been completed.

We may never know all of the results of the investigation. “Disclosure” and “government” are not words that often go together anymore. But one fact remains: an American citizen was killed on his property by the people he called to assist him. He did what he was supposed to do. He called the authorities. Joe Biden warned us that there would be chaos at the border. Whether by accident or design, his prediction is coming true.
