Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has vowed to disarm the country after two mass shootings within two days.
Vucic told The Washington Post that “we will disarm Serbia almost completely.” “We must decide to face this evil.”
In shootings that took place in two villages south of Belgrade, Serbia’s capital city, Mladenovac on Thursday eight people were killed while 14 others were injured. The day before that, a 13-year-old boy shot at his school in Belgrade killing eight students as well as a security guard.
The New York Times reported that Vucic said, “We have been walking around like a zombie the last 24 hours, looking for reasons something like this might happen.” He announced on Friday his plans to change the gun laws of the country.
The Hill:
The Times reported that Vucic had called for a moratorium of two years on new gun licenses, an audit of all legal gun owners, and tougher sentences for anyone found with illegal guns. He also pledged to increase Serbia’s Police Force by 1,200 Officers over the next 6 months as part of a campaign to place a police officer in every single school.
According to the Small Arms Survey 2018, there are 39.1 firearms for every 100 residents in Serbia. This makes it the third-highest rate of civilian gun possession in the world.
With 120.5 firearms for every 100 residents, the U.S. is far ahead of all other countries in terms of civilian gun ownership.
Do you think it is necessary to have a police officer at every school? I thought it would increase violence. I’m sorry.
The entire western Balkans was flooded with illegal firearms after the wars of the 1990s in Bosnia, Croatia, and Kosovo. In a region where gangland and blood feuds were common, it is not surprising that there were many murders.
Mass shootings such as the two that occurred this week are relatively rare.
Reuters:
Only those over 18 years old are allowed to own firearms with a permit, which is issued by the police after an extensive background check. The medical examination is mandatory, and it must be repeated five times a year.
Guns must be locked up in a gun cabinet and the owner may be liable for confiscation if they are found to be irresponsible.
Gun owners must also pass a course on gun laws and complete a questionnaire.
Belgrade’s Mayor described the shooting at the Belgrade school as “unprecedented” in the city’s history.
