Death Of Jeffrey Epstein, Chaotic Afermath At The New York City Prison Is Illuminated In New Records

Nearly four years after Jeffrey Epstein’s death, new records have shed light on his final moments.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons released thousands of pages of documents to The Associated Press under the Freedom of Information Act.

The agency announced Friday that the records included a detailed mental reconstruction of events leading up to the suicide by the billionaire, his health history, agency internal reports, emails and memos, among other documents.

The report also said that records could help dispel conspiracy theories about Epstein’s demise, and reveal the possible role of the Bureau of Prisons in it.

In an email sent to Fox News Digital on Friday, a spokesperson from the bureau said that they had no more information.

Epstein, aged 66, passed away on August 10, 2019 after being arrested for federal charges of sex-trafficking and conspiracy the month prior.

The Metropolitan Correctional Center, now closed in New York City, found him unresponsive in his prison cell. According to WNBC, the closure was announced for summer 2021 and inmates transferred out that year.

Reports stated that two weeks before his death, the internet entrepreneur was sitting in the corner with his hands covering his ears. The toilet in the cell wouldn’t stop running.

According to records, jail officials noted that he could not sleep and appeared agitated. He called himself a “coward” and complained about his struggles to adapt to the new environment.

Epstein had been under psychological surveillance at the time of his suicide attempt a few days before. After more than 30 hour of suicide watch, Epstein reportedly said he wasn’t suicidal. According to records, he told a prison psychologist that ending his life would be “crazy” because he lived a “wonderful” one.

In emails, a prosecutor for Epstein complained to the Bureau about the lack of information in the hours following his death. A high-ranking official of the bureau suggested to the director of the agency that journalists must have paid jail employees for information on Epstein’s murder because they reported details about the agency failings.

According to the Associated Press, Epstein also tried to contact Larry Nassar – the doctor of U.S. Gymnastics Team convicted of sexually assaulting scores of athletes. After Epstein’s passing, the letter was discovered in the mail room of the jail.

In a memo from the unit manager, Epstein said to a jail worker that he called his mother on the night of his death and excused himself from meeting with his attorneys. His mother, however, had been deceased for 15 years.

Epstein was admitted to the facility on 6 July 2019. He spent almost 24 hours with the general population of the jail before being transferred to the special housing section “due the increased media coverage and awareness among inmates of his notoriety,” according to a psychological reconstruction of the death.

He complained about being forced to wear the orange jumpsuit that was provided for inmates of the special housing unit. He requested a uniform in brown to be worn when he visited his lawyers frequently.

He said that he had slept with more than ten women in the last five years. Records showed he suffered from sleep apnea and hypertension. His lower back pain was also a problem.

Epstein bought items worth $73,85 at the prison commissary two days before he was found dead. These included an AM/FM Radio and headphones.

Epstein’s situation had deteriorated, according to the agency, after a judge refused him bail on 18 July. He could face up to 45 years behind bars if convicted.

He was found lying on the floor in his cell, with a bedsheet around his neck. He survived.

In their logs, jail officers recorded that they observed him “sitting on the edge of his bed, lost in thoughts,” as well “as he sat with his head against the walls.”

A federal judge unveiled about 2,000 pages in a lawsuit filed against him for sexual abuse the day before he took his own life.

Officials wrote that this, along with a lack significant interpersonal connections, and the idea of possibly spending his entire life in prison contributed to Mr. Epstein’s suicide.

Martin Weinberg told The Associated Press on Thursday that the conditions in the facility are “medieval”.

He said: “It is sad and tragic that this type of event was required to force the Bureau of Prisons finally to close this regrettable facility,”

The Justice Department announced in 2021 that “in an effort to address issues at MCC NY, as quickly as possible, the Department decided to temporarily close the MCC until these issues are resolved.”

A memo sent to the Bureau after Epstein died blamed “seriously decreased staffing levels and improper or lackluster training, as well as follow-up and oversight.” It also detailed steps taken by the Bureau to address issues Epstein’s suicide revealed.

Tova Noel, Michael Thomas and others who guarded Epstein on the night of his suicide were accused of lying in prison records. They lied to make it appear that they did their checks before Epstein’s body was discovered. Epstein was left alone in his cell after Epstein’s cellmate failed to return from a court appearance the previous day.

The prosecution claimed that the guards sat at their desks only 15 feet away from Epstein’s cells, bought furniture and motorcycles online and walked through the common area of the unit instead of doing the required 30 minute rounds. According to their indictment, the two appeared to be asleep for about two hours.

Noel Thomas admitted falsifying log entries, but were spared jail under an agreement with federal prosecutors. Documents released on Thursday included copies of these logs. According to The Associated Press, their signatures have been redacted.

A second investigation by the Inspector General of the Justice Department is still underway.
