States Consider Charging Drivers By Mile To Maintain Nation’s Roads

In the midst of economic hardships, states are scrambling for ways to continue making money that can be funneled into road maintenance.

Fox Business reported that officials have traditionally spent gas tax money on roads. However, “the problem has evolved because these taxes are producing less every year due to the inflation, fuel-efficiency and the rise in electric cars,” Fox Business said.

State officials hope to replace these taxes in some way. Charging drivers by the mile, rather than the gallon, is among the many proposals.

Other options include charging for electricity at car charging stations or adding charges to deliveries.

The Fox report stated that “the federal government is about pilot its own program. It will be funded by $125 millions from President Biden’s infrastructure measure, which he signed in Nov 2021.”

The outlet noted that Hawaii will soon join Oregon, Utah, and Virginia in generating revenue through road usage fees.

While the Biden economy continues to struggle, White House Senior Advisor Mitch Landrieu recently said that “inflation remains stubbornly high” despite the fact that the economy appears to be fairly strong.

“It is lower here than every other industrialized country and has been declining for the past eleven months.” “I’m not saying that we’re done fighting,” he said.

Rassmussen Reports’ poll on Friday showed that 87 percent of potential U.S. voters are worried about inflation. 63 percent are extremely concerned. “Only 11 percent of Americans aren’t concerned about inflation,” said the outlet.
