Italian officials have called for the identification and reprimanding of a man who was caught on camera defacing Rome’s ancient Colosseum.
In a video posted by Gennaro Singulario, Italy’s Culture Minister, a tourist can be seen carving “Ivan + Hayley” into the wall of the historic landmark.
He also posted a blurred picture of the suspect.
Sangiuliano wrote on Twitter: “I find it extremely serious, unworthy, and a sign that great incivility, when a tourist defaces the Colosseum to engrave his fiancée’s name.” “I hope that the person who did this is identified and punished according to our laws.”
The video shows the man smiling at the camera. In recent years, the Colosseum was vandalized.
Private security guards saw an Irish tourist in 2020 carving his initials on the centuries-old structure. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to the report, the incident occurred just a few weeks after a 40-year old Polish tourist crashed his drone in the Colosseum, after being told that it was a non-flying zone.
