According to U.S. officials, an American soldier has been detained after crossing the Military Demarcation Line in North Korea.
The U.N. Command earlier said that a U.S. national on a tour to the joint security area between North and South Korea crossed the Military Demarcation Line without authorization and is now believed to be in detained in North Korea.
The peacekeeping forces tweeted that a U.S. National who was on a JSA Tour had crossed the Military Demarcation line into the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea without authorization. “We believe he’s under DPRK custody, and we’re working with our Korean People’s Army colleagues to resolve this issue.”
In the report, the soldier is not identified nor explained how he/she crossed the DMZ into North Korean territory.
It may be difficult to bring him home, as we’ve seen in the past with Americans who were held by North Korea.
Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor at the time, acknowledged that the diplomatic engagements between North Korea and the United States were not successful.
He said that they had told North Korea they would be willing to meet them without conditions to discuss their nuclear program.
