Pittsburgh Public Safety (PPS), has warned residents to avoid the 4800 block of Broad Street and N. Mathilda Street, in the Garfield Neighborhood due to an active shooter situation.
Local reports claim that an eviction order was the catalyst for what PPS called an “extremely violent situation” with gunfire.
According to sources, the sheriff’s deputy was delivering an eviction order when someone in the house started shooting. Sources say that one deputy was injured but is conscious and alert. How the deputy was injured is currently unclear.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the current situation took place near a hospital for children. Witnesses claim that “hundreds of” shots were fired.
This area is located near Allegheny Cemetery, and just around the corner of Children’s Hospital on a busy Penn Avenue corridor.
A neighbor near the corner of North Mathilda Street and Kincaid Street said that he heard over 100 shots fired during the incident.
On the video, a PPG journalist was captured near the scene of the shooting. Shots can be heard.
Guza noted in a second update, “A neighbor said he had heard hundreds of shots when the shooting began and hundreds more since.”
She also speculated that there were “easily hundreds of SWAT officers here, like from both Pittsburgh police and Allegheny County. Sheriff’s deputies were the first to encounter the shooter.”
According to the suspect, he also “shot down two police drones.”
Unconfirmed reports also claim that a sheriff’s deputy was injured. However, it is not believed that the injury was caused by gunfire.
