Belichick’s Cryptic Announcement Sends Shockwaves Through NFL

Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots “are expected” to part on Thursday, “after an incredible 24 seasons together.” This run was ended by a dismal 4-13 season in 2023-24, which saw the once-dominant Patriots finish the season as one of the first teams to be eliminated from the playoffs.

Belichick will be allowed to depart the Patriots without compensation. Sources in the NFL said that he will want to keep coaching and expects to attract interest from some of the seven NFL teams with head-coaching vacancies. The Atlanta Falcons could be one.

The Patriots will now embark on their very first head-coaching hunt in the last quarter century. Sources say that Jerod Mayo is projected to be one of, if no the leading candidate for the position. He was signed by the Patriots to a contract renewal in the offseason, and Kraft identified him as a rising candidate to become head coach. Mayo was a Patriots player from 2008 to 2014. He has worked as an assistant coach under Belichick’s guidance since 2019.

Belichick has been the subject of speculation for a long time due to this incredibly disappointing year. Since losing Tom Brady in the 2019 season, when the Patriots won the Super Bowl for the last time, the Patriots have had losing records for three out of four seasons. Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and led them to Super Bowl victory in 2020.

Belichick leaves New England, at age 71, with 333 victories in his career (including playoffs), second only to Don Shula’s 347. Belichick, George Halas, and Curly Lambeau are the only NFL coaching trio to have won six championships in the postseason since 1933.

Belichick’s tenure of 24 years was the longest for a coach to lead a single team. In 2023 he finished his 49th consecutive NFL Season, which was the longest coaching season in NFL history.
