Alejandro Mayorkas Refuses Responsibility: Murderer of Laken Riley Shouldn’t Have Been in the U.S.

Published on

Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security at the Department of Homeland Security, appeared with Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation”. Mayorkas was evasive in his answers when asked about the recent murder of Georgia nursing students Laken Riley and Margaret Brennan.

While annoying, Ms. Brennan is justified in her repeated use of the word “allegedly” because Jose Antonio Ibarra is entitled to a presumption that he is innocent.

Brennan asks directly, during the interview:

I would like to ask about a criminal matter that has been used as a rallying cry for political reasons. Donald Trump used the phrase “migrant crimes.” Laken Riley was a 22-year-old nursing student in Georgia who was allegedly murdered by an undocumented Venezuelan immigrant.

The suspect was detained at the border by Border Patrol and released with temporary permission for him to remain in the country. The suspect then allegedly committed crimes twice: once in New York, for driving a motor scooter without a license, and again in Georgia, in connection with alleged shoplifting.

Do those states and their law enforcers inform the federal government of this incident? Should this man’s deportation have been allowed?

Secretary Mayorkas appears to be reading from his notes in this reply:

Margaret, this is an absolute tragedy. Our hearts are broken and we send our prayers to the family. As a former prosecutor who has prosecuted violent crimes and other crimes over 12 years, I can tell you that the murderer is one person.

We work closely with local and state law enforcement agencies to make sure that those who are a danger to the public’s safety receive our highest priority in terms of detention and removal.

This is not a response. Secretary Mayorkas didn’t respond to the question of whether state and local police reported Ibarra’s actions or status to federal authorities. He also did not answer the question of whether Ibarra had been deported. This is even though Ibarra 1) was in the country illegally, and 2) was apprehended by immigration officials before the murder of Laken Riley.

The House of Representatives impeached the Secretary of State Mayorkas. He is now the only Cabinet official so impeached, except for William Belknap who served as Secretary of War under President Ulysses Grant in 1876.

The Senate trial of Secretary Mayorkas, which could result in his removal from office is expected to be held soon, though his conviction by the Democrat-controlled Senate is at best unlikely.

Alejandro Mayorkas, however, is an example of a typical Biden administration official: incompetent and ideologically motivated, Mayorkas’ position makes him a clear and immediate danger to the safety of Americans. You can ask Laken Riley’s parents if they have any doubts.
