Outrage or Approval? Consumers React as Cadbury Egg Store Goes Politically Correct for Easter

Many of us are known to participate in Easter’s more commercial aspects. While Jesus’ death and resurrection are the most important aspect of Easter for Christians, we also enjoy the sweet treats. These include but are not restricted to, buying cutesy pastel-colored home and yard décor, making elaborate Easter baskets or volunteering for Easter egg hunts and painting, as well as enjoying sweet treats such as Peeps and chocolate bunnies.

As always, whenever there is a Christian holiday, there will be those who are politically correct (both in the US and abroad) who get faux-frightened at the thought of saying words like “Easter”, and “Christmas”, and then try to take away the joy of the season, by insisting that everyone else join them.

In one of the store’s windows, the term “Easter eggs”, which is usually used to describe Easter eggs, was replaced by “gesture eggs”. The rationale behind this change may have been to avoid customers being offended by the word Easter.

The photograph was taken by Connor James Ibbetson. He is a UK Telegraph journalist. The UK Telegraph published the following article on the controversy.

Cadbury has been accused of erasing the Easter holiday by advertising “gesture eggs” instead of chocolate eggs.

Signs are displayed in the brand’s Springfields Outlet store in Spalding Lincolnshire offering customers two “gesture” eggs for a price of PS10.

Christians have been angered by the omission, in particular when advertising the popular Easter eggs that are synonymous with this religious holiday.

Cadbury denied any involvement with the “gesture egg” promotion and poster.

It was not surprising that consumers took to social media to accuse Cadbury of trying to erase Easter and Christianity. This man’s epic tirade summed it up nicely:

@martjonesofficial Russia Tortures Terror Suspects Including Force Feeding A Man His Own Ear. The 4 Suspects in the attack that killed 143 people will go on trial in May – I don’t rate their chances too highly of making it til then! #martjonesofficial #torture #russiantiktok #uknews #russiannews ♬ original sound – Mart Jones

Cadbury spokespersons said that the term “Easter” has been used on Cadbury packaging for over a century and that it will continue to be used in the future.

All Cadbury Easter eggs sold in the UK refer to Easter very clearly on their packaging – often multiple times.

Cadbury has been using the term Easter in its marketing and communication for more than 100 years. We continue to use it with our new Easter range. “To claim otherwise is inaccurate.”

The posters were removed. They said they would be contacting the location, which is reportedly not commenting on the matter, soon to ask them to remove the “gesture eggs” posters.

After a store visit, the BBC confirmed that the promotional posters were indeed removed.

The Daily Mail also discovered that other stores in the UK had similar “gesture eggs” signs in their shops.

The mystery surrounding the “gesture eggs” campaign continues to grow.

What the hell is a “gesture-egg”? The curious minds want to know…
