Police said that a resident of an affluent Southern California neighborhood shot and killed a suspected intruder in his home on Tuesday morning.
Authorities said that the homeowner shot and killed the suspect in a gated house on Newport Beach’s coast.
A police statement said, “The crime appears to have been a targeted event involving a previous connection between the suspects, and the victims.”
Newport Beach police responded to a house at Pelican Hills Road and Newport Coast Drive around 4:45 am. Police said a 911 caller claimed to have shot one of the suspects inside the house.
Officers found one of the suspects lying on the street, with a gun and several gunshot wounds. The suspect was transported to a hospital where he received treatment.
The details of the suspect’s medical condition or injuries were not revealed.
Investigators found a second person in some bushes near the house with a gunshot wound to the head that was self-inflicted. He was declared dead on the spot.
Police said that the four people who were inside the house at the time of the invasion were not injured.
