Scotland has fined drivers for driving supposedly “high emissions vehicles” in designated “low emission zone” (LEZ) areas of four towns: Edinburgh, Dundee Glasgow and Aberdeen.

The website for the “low emission zones” is confusing. It states that hoopties in violation will not only be fined, but also banned.

The Low Emission Zones in Scotland will only accept vehicles that meet the minimum emission standards, or those that meet the exemption criteria.

By entering your vehicle’s registration number, you can check whether your vehicle is compliant or not with emission standards.

The vehicle checker does not offer exemption statuses for all local or national exemptions. Before traveling, you will need to verify whether or not you and your vehicle meet the exemption criteria.

The result of the vehicle checker could be incorrect if your Vehicle Registration Number has changed over the past five years. Check with your manufacturer if the vehicle meets the required emission standards.

This service does not check vehicles registered outside of the UK.

The fines for cloud-hating offenses are PS60 ($76.22), but they can be reduced by half if the motorist pays in full within 14 days.
