Bolivian President Survives Coup Attempt, Demands Respect for Democracy

Published on

After a failed coup attempt in which Bolivian military units used armored vehicles to smash the doors of the government palace, President Luis Arce named three new leaders of the country’s armed services.

As the supporters roared, the news about the new leaders of the Army, Navy, and Air Force was announced.

“The country faces a coup d’etat attempt.” We are here, firmly in Casa Grande to face any coup attempt. Arce, in a video he sent out, said that the Bolivians must organize themselves.

Video footage shows troops blocking the entrance to the palace of government. Arce claimed that the troops who rose against him “stain the uniform” (of the military) of the military.

Jose Wilson Sanchez, the newly appointed chief of the army, said: “I order that all those mobilized return to their respective units.” “Nobody wants to see the images that we’re currently seeing on the streets.”

Soon, the troops began to withdraw from the Presidential Palace.

Arce confronted Gen. Juan Jose Zuniga in the hallway of the palace, who had been stripped recently of his command and appeared to be the leader in the rebellion. This was shown on a Bolivian TV video.

He said, “I’m your captain and I command you to withdraw your troops. I won’t allow this insubordination.”

Arce demanded that “democracy be respected” on X.

The United States stated that it was closely watching the situation, and called for calm and restraint.

Bolivia, with 12 million inhabitants, has experienced an increase in protests over the past few months due to the rapid decline of its economy, which was once one of the fastest-growing economies on the continent. It is now one of the most crisis-ridden.

A high-profile split has also occurred at the top of the ruling party. Arce, his former ally and leftist icon, former President Morales has been fighting for the future of Bolivia’s splintering Movement for Socialism (MAS), known by its Spanish abbreviation.

In defense of the government, the leadership of Bolivia’s biggest labor union has condemned the action. They have declared a strike indefinite for all social and labor organizations of La Paz.

Other regional leaders were outraged by the incident, including the Organization of American States, Gabriel Boric, president of Chile, the leader of Honduras, and former Bolivian politicians.

In December 2022, the most recent coup attempt on the continent took place when Peruvian president Pedro Castillo attempted to dissolve Congress and declare a state emergency while also attempting to rewrite the Constitution. He was ultimately impeached, and removed from his office.

“Brazil is very clear about its position.” I love democracy and want it to be a dominant force in Latin America. We condemn any coup d’etat and reaffirm the commitment we have to our sister country and its people,” Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula wrote on X.
