The meeting in Dolton, Illinois which was supposed to address allegations of corruption and extravagant spending by scandal-ridden “supermayor”, Tiffany Henyard, descended into chaos as her supporters and opponents clashed.

The fight in the small town of south Chicago occurred after Dolton trustees, voting 4-2, reinstated former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot as an investigator to Henyard. Henyard has been accused of billing taxpayers thousands for her hair team and makeup artist, as well as taking a lavish Las Vegas trip.

Henyard, the trustees and police broke up an altercation that almost ended in violence.

Lightfoot was hired by the town to investigate Henyard. However, the Dolton Mayor, who had insisted “God selected me”, vetoed this move. Henyard vetoed a previous request by the board to launch a federal probe into her alleged mismanagement of finances and spending.

Lightfoot stated that “we will not allow anyone to stop us or obstruct the ability of our trustees to get the facts” during the meeting. However, Henyard and other trustees were attempting to speak over her. A report states that Lightfoot’s mic was turned off while she spoke.

The incident was the culmination of more than two-hours of heated discussion as residents of the village crowded the chamber to vent their grievances and blast Henyard’s apparent lack of transparency in the village finances.

Thelma Gat, a resident of the area, said: “You won’t understand until they put you in handcuffs.” She was referring to an FBI investigation.

Henyard appeared to ignore the majority of public commenters and stared them down.

Henyard then blamed all the heat on the media, and what she views as a political smear.

Henyard said, “You’re following a fictional story.

Lightfoot continues to work on her investigation despite not being paid for it, reports NBC Chicago. The outlet stated that her investigation should be completed in 60 days. Lightfoot had been expecting to earn $400 per hour initially, but Henyard said that she would not receive payment.

Henyard’s actions have brought national attention to this small town with a population of about 21,500. Residents of Dolton have already demanded Henyard to resign and that she be arrested.

The village had blocked off the road in front of the Village Hall earlier in the day. Residents were forced to park and walk a block.

Henyard was dubbed “the worst mayor in America” after critics accused him of financial misdeeds and weaponizing police raids. She has recently been criticized for an alleged assault committed by one of her friends during a trip to Vegas, in which the alleged victim claimed that she was fired when she spoke out. Henyard’s charity for cancer is also under scrutiny.

Henyard is living like royalty with a combined income of almost $300,000. This is more than the governor of the state. Henyard residents also use beauty vendors frequently despite having a median household income of only $24,000.

As part of an ongoing investigation, the FBI served federal subpoenas in April. Henyard wasn’t served.

Keith Freeman is Henyard’s chief aide and village administrator Keith Freeman. Freeman was accused of bankruptcy fraud.

Freeman was the target of a second subpoena, which asked for all records of companies that were associated with him as well as any possible links to the village.

The FBI began investigating Henyard in February after six people, including “businessmen, a village employee, and at least one public official” had reported to the agency that they were concerned about her alleged misconduct.

Board members in Dolton appointed a pro-tempore mayor to approve village business, pay bills and sign off on payments. They said Henyard missed 25 special meetings and would not allow certain items to be placed on the regular agenda of village meetings.

Henyard appealed before to racial politics in the midst of her scandals, declaring at a previous gathering, “You have all false narratives on your website, and you should all be ashamed [of yourselves]. You are all Black! You all are sitting here, beating and attacking a Black woman who is in power. “You all should be ashamed [of yourselves].”

Lightfoot released a later statement encouraging Henyard’s cooperation with her investigation.

The statement said, “I commend Village of Dolton Board of Trustees on exercising their authority decisively to override the Mayor Henyard veto. They also prevented any attempts to stall a independent investigation into the issues outlined in this resolution.”

They understand that village residents are entitled to a transparent, thorough process.
