Anyone familiar with geopolitics or international affairs knows that the United States lacks a southern border. This is a serious national security concern. Since Roman times, nations that have not controlled their borders eventually find themselves overrun. In this world, to quote a movie character, walls are built and they must be protected by men with guns.
We are not doing this very well, and some would argue that we are not doing it at any point. Now, a group of GOP legislators are concerned about the increasing number of Chinese nationals who enter the United States without permission.
A group of Republican legislators is warning the Biden Administration about an increase in Chinese nationals crossing the southern border. They claim it proves their “worst concerns” about what they perceive as a weakening enforcement under the Biden Administration.
The 20 legislators, led by Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.), highlight “the dramatic increase in encounters with individuals listed on the Terrorist Screening Data Set” and the otherwise unaccounted for rise of Chinese nationals – mainly adult males – crossing illegally.
They say: “These developments confirm our worst fears. The weakening our borders and the willful non-enforcement of immigration laws have encouraged America’s enemies to exploit this vulnerability in national security.”
Does it need to be said that the American-Chinese relationship isn’t at its best right now?
It’s not uncommon to discuss illegal immigration, and the sore on our national border. We talk about culture, the impact of an influx of cheap workers, or the criminals among them. All of these points are valid, but the threat to national security posed by the Biden Administration is also legitimate.
This is how a bad actor would infiltrate people into the United States. They would arrive unidentified, unseen, and mostly unknown. And with the Biden administration’s nonexistent border policies, it’s the best time to do so.
Not only are there people from China.
On May 18, shortly after midnight, a Boeing 787 operated by Ghadames Air, a Libyan airline, took off from Benina International Airport, Benghazi. Benghazi is the largest city in eastern Libya. The plane landed in Managua 14 hours later, the capital of Nicaragua. According to Nicaraguan TV channel 100% Noticias there were 367 passengers with Indian citizenship on board. The same aircraft flew the same route with 298 Indians on May 23. All were planning to go to the US.
On February 28th and March 14th, two similar flights had left Tripoli, the capital of Libya. No information has been released about the nationalities of the passengers. Le Monde contacted the Nicaraguan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the airport authorities in the country, but neither responded.
We should also point out that Libya is not a friendly country to the United States. Daniel Ortega’s Nicaragua is also not friendly to the United States. India is an ally of the United States, but are there any people on these flights from other parts in the Middle East? Do any of them come from Syria or Iran, for example? As noted, there is no information available about these flights.
This is a matter of serious national security. We have no idea, as I’ve been saying, and I believe I’ve already worn out two keyboards, who these people are or where they plan to go. We know that they are from countries not friendly to America. This will eventually catch up to us.
Rome’s failure to control its borders is cited as one of the main reasons for their fall. Peter Heather, in his book, “The Fall of the Roman Empire”, argues that Rome welcomed immigrants for centuries, but insisted that they assimilate. But the final wave of immigrants, from Germania, kept their Germanic ethnic and cultural identity and established themselves in enclaves in the Empire. They eventually built their own armies that the weakened Rome could not resist. Sounds familiar?
The saying “history may not repeat itself, but it often rhymes” is true.
