Henry Winkler Reveals Shocking Reason FBI Showed Up at His Home

Henry Winkler was not amused when the FBI visited his house.

In a new episode of the podcast “SmartLess”, the actor who played the “Fonz”, on “Happy Days,” was interviewed. The 78-year-old actor recalled an incident in which he received a surprise visit from the police.

The star started with “So, I am sitting in my apartment.” “I own a Victrola because vinyl was the only format available. I went to Tower Records at Sunset Boulevard. I bought Dan Fogelberg and was listening to Dan Fogelberg in my rented Victrola. The doorbell rings.

Winkler said, “I stand up.” There are three men wearing badges. “Oh no! You don’t smell what you think. They said, “We’re the FBI.”

Sean Hayes, co-host of the show, said: “There was some marijuana smoking going on.”

Winkler said that as he broke a sweat, it turned out they had other priorities.

Winkler quoted the group as saying “We’re just not here for that.” Winkler quoted them as saying “We only wanted to meet Fonz.”

I didn’t care about what they did because I was happy I wasn’t being handcuffed.

Winkler wouldn’t get a surprise visitor for the last time. In the podcast, the Emmy-winning actor described how fans would visit his apartment and “lift their shirt” to ask him to sign certain parts of their anatomy.

Winkler published his memoir “Being Henry: the Fonz…and Beyond” in 2023. The actor described how he rose to fame with “Happy Days,” and how the popularity of his character tested his friendship, which was played by Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham.

From 1974 to 1984, the series chronicled the life of the Cunninghams in the 1950s.

Winkler writes in the book that “Happy Days” had been designed for Howard to be the star but his greaser character was a hit. Winkler received a quick raise from ABC. Winkler was worried about what Howard would think. He reached out to Howard.

Howard said to Winkler in the book, “You won’t let this get to your head or make you change who you are.” “You are a fantastic team player. You’ve done an incredible job… on the show. If I’m being honest, it has hurt my feelings. More than that, it has made me angry. You’re right, I was supposed to be the star. “But I never was angry with you, Henry.”

Leonard Goldenson, president of ABC wanted to change the name of the show to “Fonzie’s Happy Days” at one point. Winkler refused to accept the idea.

Winkler wrote, “I ask you to refrain from doing that” in his book. If you do this, it’s disrespectful to everyone who’s been doing ‘Happy Days” as a whole family with me. You can make the show more successful by changing the title. It would be a real slap to the faces of everyone in the cast.

Winkler claims that Tom Miller and Ed Milkis, the producers of “Happy Days”, even suggested to Howard a title change. Howard reportedly threatened to leave the show and go back to film school at USC.

Winkler claimed that it was the show’s creator Garry Marshall, who resisted the idea.

Winkler received a surprise call from Howard in 1980 at the start of the eighth episode of “Happy Days”.

Winkler said that Ron was at dinner with his family and recounted what he had heard. “What I heard is, ‘Hey Henry, it’s about to be in the news, but I want you to know it first.’ I’m never coming back.

Winkler confessed, “I was devastated.” I was terrified. He was my co-actor. Yet I knew that this was his dream to become a film director. Ron said that I told him to “go get it”. You go out and get it because that’s what you want. He said: “I’ll remember those words because they were an impetus for my decision.” It made me feel more confident about my decision.

Winkler describes in the book the phone call which left him “completely stunned.”

Winkler wrote: “[Ron] spoke to me about how disrespected he felt by the network, both financially and personally.” “He said that ABC didn’t care about him. He even brought up the wallet they gave him as a Christmas gift when I bought the fancy videotape players. This finally pushed him to the edge.

Winkler added, “I was sad and scared.” I didn’t know how it was going to turn out. My co-star in most scenes of ‘Happy Days,’ was about to leave! Everything else was just a side effect. My character was built around being Richie’s big brother. How could I find someone I felt so connected to? All of these thoughts were circling in my head. The main thing I felt was, “I love you”; “I want you to be incredible; maybe cast me …”

Howard’s character Richie was drafted into service in the Army to explain his absence on the show. The former child actor then went on to win an Oscar for his work as a director. His many blockbusters included “Apollo 13,” and “A Beautiful Mind”.

Winkler emphasized that there were no hard feelings today. Winkler is the godfather to Bryce Dallas Howard, Howard’s daughter.

Howard and Cheryl, his wife, told Winkler: “God forbid we should ever lose our lives, would you please take the kids? You can bar Mitzvah the children if you wish.

Our request for comment was not immediately answered by a spokesperson for the 70-year-old filmmaker.
