Russia Sentences Wall Street Journal Reporter to 16 Years in Treason Crackdown

After a short and secret trial, a Russian court sentenced Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich (16 years) in a penal settlement after convicting him of espionage. Gershkovich, who was on a reporting tour in Yekaterinburg at the time, was arrested.

The Prosecutor’s Office said that Gershkovich is accused of “gathering secrets” on orders from the CIA regarding Uralvagonzavod in Sverdlovsk, a facility that produces and repairs military gear. This was the first time details were revealed about the allegations against him.

Gershkovich was a native Russian speaker assigned to cover Putin’s War. The facility that he was accused was associated with the Wagner Group, which is now disbanded. It is the first arrest of an American journalist since 1986 when Nicholas Daniloff faced similar fabricated espionage allegations.

Gershkovich was sentenced at the same time as an OSCE observer in Russian-occupied Donetsk, who served on a monitoring mission authorized in September 2022 and was sentenced to sixteen years in prison for espionage. This comes amid an increase in Russian trials for treason or espionage.

In the past 30 years, there have only been a few treason cases in Russia. Since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, however, both espionage and treason cases have increased, with both catching citizens as well as foreigners, regardless of politics.

This has led to comparisons with the Stalinist show trials of the 1930s.

Recent victims include Kremlin-critical journalists, independent journalists, and scientists who work with friendly countries.

The arrest and conviction of Gershkovich have two sides. First, it shows that Western journalists are not bulletproof. They are at the same risk as Russians with whom they speak. The Russians said no Gershkovich exchange is possible until the verdict on his case has been reached. This has been done, and I believe he will be freed in the near term. I predict that Russia will make its decision after the elections. They will release Gershkovich if Trump wins to give Trump an immediate political victory in the hope that they can leverage this into something larger in the Ukraine War.
