Kentucky State Police reported Wednesday that they believed the body of a man who shot five people on an interstate earlier this month has been located.
Col. Phillip “PJ Burnett” said that the body believed to have been found Wednesday was Joseph A. Couch (32), of Woodbine in Kentucky.
Burnett said that clothing items found near the body led them to believe it was Burnett.
Burnett said that Fred and Sheila McCoy were also searching for the body in the same area and had alerted the state troopers.
The body will be sent to the office of the coroner for identification.
Earlier on Wednesday, the state police confirmed the discovery of a dead body near exit 49 from Interstate 75, in Laurel County. Detectives were now working to identify the victim.
A couple near exit 48 stumbled across what appeared to be a dead body while live streaming on YouTube for “Hatfield McCoy Museum Adventures.”
“He’s deteriorated!” A man’s voice can be heard when he makes the discovery.
Since the shooting occurred around 6 pm on Sept. 7, near exit 49, law enforcement officials have relentlessly searched a rugged and hilly area in southeastern Kentucky.
During the search, the officers found an AR-15 rifle as well as a silver-colored small SUV that was registered to Couch.
The discovery of Couch on Wednesday comes only one day after Gov. Andy Beshear and state police officials, among others, said they would shift resources to the community for the ongoing search of Couch.
