A Wisconsin apple orchard field trip was marred by the injuries of at least 17 people including children after a tractor rolled over.
In a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Chippewa Fire District’s Deputy Chief Corey Jeffers said that two hay wagons that were being pulled by a tractor rolled over at the Bushel and a Peck Apple Orchard in Lafayette, Wisconsin.
Jeffers stated that nine other patients were transported via ambulance. Jeffers also said that five of the patients had serious injuries. One patient was airlifted and other patients were transported to the hospital by personal vehicles.
The authorities did not disclose the details of the injuries.
Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes released a statement via social media stating that the incident happened while several children, their parents, and chaperones were riding the wagon through the orchard.
Hakes stated that the wagon overturned when it was going downhill.
He said that it was important to focus on the safety and reunification of children with their parents during incidents such as these. “I went on the scene to calm the children and reunite them with their families.”
