A Minnesota man has been sought after for his recent parole for murder. He was accused of killing his pregnant spouse and was linked to another shooting.
Mychel Stowers is facing two counts of second-degree murder for the shooting on Oct. 19, which killed Damara Alexis, 35, and was two months pregnant.
Kirkland was found crumpled and on the floor by officers who responded to gunfire reports. According to the probable cause statement filed on Thursday, there were ultrasound pictures in the apartment as well as a letter addressed directly to Stowers.
Stowers was released from prison on parole in March for a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of a St. Paul resident in 2008. He was living in a halfway home and on work release but had been given a pass on the day of the shooting to visit the woman who the probable cause statement described as his ex-wife.
Other court records indicate that Stowers filed a divorce petition in June. However, it does not appear to have been finalized.
Kirkland’s estranged spouse was living in the apartment, according to the owner. This wasn’t permitted because his name wasn’t listed on the lease. In a statement, the owner claimed that she was evicted.
After Kirkland was shot, police responded to a nearby carjacking. They found a 36-year-old man lying on the ground. The man claimed that he had left his keys in the ignition while the car was running, and he went out to put trash into the bin.
He claimed that a man matching Stowers’ description approached him and shot at him. The bullet broke his femur. The gunman shot at someone else who was present with the victim but missed.
The statement stated that the shooter fled, but returned to steal the car. The gun used to carjack the vehicle was the same as the one used for Kirkland’s murder, according to a preliminary analysis.
A Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office employee received a phone call from Stowers later that day. The statement stated that Stowers had told the employee he just shot a person and wanted to surrender himself.
The statement stated that he had not done this, but the vehicle had been recovered in a parking area on Thursday.
