Tragedy Strikes: 3 Dead, 8 Injured in Shooting After Mississippi High School Football Game

Authorities said that three people were killed, and eight more injured in central Mississippi on Saturday morning when two individuals opened fire at a group of hundreds of people celebrating the homecoming football victory at an outdoor trail. The shooting occurred several hours after it had finished.

Holmes County Sheriff Willie March said that the gunfire was preceded by a fight among some of the males at the celebration. However, the deputies had not yet determined what caused the fight.

In a telephone interview, the sheriff stated that 200-300 people were celebrating on the trail, but the gunfire forced them to flee.

March stated, “It was chaos, to be honest.” “The shooting started, and people began running.”

The shootings, which occurred about 5 miles (3 km) outside Lexington, Mississippi, were a result of a football match that took place at the Holmes County Consolidated School homecoming celebration several hours before. Scores of youths headed to the trail after the win to celebrate.

Lexington is situated more than 60 miles north of Jackson.

The victims were aged 19 and 25. The injured victims were transported by air to local hospitals.

March stated that deputies collected ammunition on the scene to try and determine how many guns were fired.

In the county of nearly 16,000 people, shootings by young males have become a “regular” occurrence. When young men talk to the Sheriff, they tell him it is usually because they are in disagreement or have “beef” with someone.

It’s difficult to tell what the fight is about. March stated that he did not believe the fights were over drugs or turf. “These young men are walking around with guns.” “I wish I knew the answer.”
