I can remember Susan Smith’s first appearance in front of cameras when she claimed that her two sons were taken by a ‘black man’ who carjacked her car and drove off with the boys still inside. My wife and I were in Iowa visiting my parents when the news broke. I also remember that both my mother and my wife told me the same thing at the first emotional press conference in which Susan Smith begged to return her sons: “She is lying.”
Mom explained why she thought they both believed she was lying. “The only thing you could do to get me away from my children would be to kill me.”
Mom and my spouse remembered this conversation when Susan Smith was found guilty. Susan Smith had lied. Susan Smith, who is serving two consecutive lifetime sentences for the murder of her sons has now made an emotional plea for parole.
Smith said that she regretted drowning her sons and wished to take it all back.
Smith, as usual, refused to accept full responsibility for the decisions she made and instead blamed other people.
Smith’s request was immediately denied by the seven-member South Carolina Board of Paroles. She will be able, however, to request parole every two years. This means that the family of Alex and Michael Smith, who were murdered, will need to appear to oppose her request.
Smith was disciplined several times while in prison. She had two separate sexual encounters, self-harm incidents, marijuana possession, and, most recently, she gave contact information to a documentary maker for her family and ex-husband.
Susan Smith has been denied parole. Good. This is a good thing.
It’s hard to view a crime of this magnitude with impartiality. Murdering children is a crime that elicits anger and outrage. But the murder of toddlers by their mothers is among the most hateful, egregious crimes. These crimes deserve not just justice and punishment but also some form of retribution. Susan Smith was sentenced to two life sentences for the murder of her children. It may seem like a small punishment, but it is what justice has handed out. She should serve each day.
The murdering mother did not seem to take the refusal of parole well.
Smith went back to her cell after being rejected. Exclusively, a prison employee told The Post that Smith was crying and angry after the hearing and had rantings about it to her friends inside. The employee claims that “she was pissed.”
Smith has been in prison for 30 years since she was sentenced to life imprisonment after the incident of 1994. This is her first hearing for parole.
In November 2026, she will be eligible to apply for parole again.
Too bad. She committed the crime and now she is doing her time. She should also be denied in 2026 and at every hearing thereafter until she is dead, in prison.
