Gregg Popovich, the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, missed a game in November due to an “undisclosed health issue.” This illness has been confirmed as a mild stroke.
On Wednesday, the Spurs issued a statement regarding the incident:
“San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich has suffered a mild stroke,” the statement announced. “The episode took place on November 2 at the Frost Bank Center. Popovich has already begun a rehabilitation program and is anticipated to make a full recovery. Currently, there is no set timeline for his return to coaching. The organization thanks the extended community for respecting the privacy and space needed by the Popovich family during this time.”

Mitch Johnson has been named Popovich’s new assistant coach.
Popovich is the longest-serving NBA coach. Popovich won five NBA Championships and three Coach of the Year awards. Popovich also won over 1,000 regular season games and 90 playoffs.
