Chinese Hacker Ruptures US Treasury Systems

We learned on Monday that the United States Treasury Department was hacked by a Chinese hacker “affiliated” with the Chinese Government, which is the Chinese Communist Party.

Officials announced that an actor associated with the Chinese government recently hacked the U.S. Treasury Department, in what they called a “major event”.

The Treasury Department revealed the incident to the Senate Banking Committee in a FOX Business letter. Officials discovered the breach on December 8.

A security key is said to have allowed the cybercriminal access to documents and workstations at the Treasury Department.

The spokesperson stated, “Once Treasury received the alert from the service provider, it immediately contacted the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. We have also worked with partners in law enforcement across the federal government to determine the impact of the incident.”

It is not mentioned if the Chinese government has asked any questions about why a hacker ‘affiliated with’ China wanted to access the U.S. Treasury. This is stating the obvious, but it’s unlikely that the Chinese hacker did this on their own. It was probably done with the Chinese government’s consent if not orders.

The database in question has been removed for the time being:

The compromised BeyondTrust service was taken offline, and no evidence exists that the threat actor continues to have access to Treasury information or systems.

News of the hacking campaign was released as state-affiliated Chinese cybercriminals continued to spy on the U.S. Government. The White House announced last week that Chinese hackers had hacked into Americans’ phone calls and texts through a U.S. telecom company. This was the ninth company affected by Chinese hacking.

Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security advisor, told reporters that the government plans to take further action against the hacking campaign in the next few weeks, but she did not reveal any specifics.

She should not have revealed any details as the investigation into how it happened is still underway. China’s growing bellicosity does not stop at hacking. They have assets in the United States. Many of them entered the country illegally, through our porous and untended southern border. The Chinese military is also reportedly being boosted.

Chinese hackers are believed to have been probing the edges of United States government databases for some time. The hacking operation known as Salt Typhoon, a Chinese hacking group, has been accused of hacking nine American telecommunications firms and stealing private communications and call records. Unnamed officials claim that senior government officials and political figures were among the people whose communications have been compromised. It is unlikely that this was not done by the Chinese Communist Party.

This is cyber warfare. What is it leading up to?

As we would expect:

FOX Business contacted the Treasury Department to get more information but didn’t hear back immediately.

You don’t have to say anything, we already know.
