Daniel P. Driscoll is JD Vance’s former law school classmate and advisor. He has been appointed by President-elect Trump to be the 27th Secretary of the Army. Driscoll is a North Carolina investment banking professional who ran unsuccessfully in the GOP primary for North Carolina’s 11th District district in 2020. He was a former Army armor officer and cavalry platoon leader.
Driscoll, as Secretary of the Army will play a major role in President Trump’s efforts to shift the focus of the Pentagon away from expensive items, DEI, and the unhealthy trend of generals and admirals moving on to major defense contractors soon after retiring — if they can wait that long. Driscoll is responsible for over one million active duty soldiers, National Guard and Reserves, as well as 330,000 civilian employees. Driscoll’s Army will, in my opinion, resemble the darkest days in the late 1970s, both in terms of morale and training. General Officer Corps seems beyond repair. The Army procurement nabobs also appear to be on a binge, replacing best-in-class equipment that is still highly successful at a high cost. This will be paid for by reducing the end strength of the Army. Driscoll should have been able to grasp the issues facing the Army from his time as a soldier. His track record of being an entrepreneur, however, will keep him away from the Army.
I wish Mr. Driscoll Godspeed. He’s gonna need it.
