The chief of police in San Antonio, Texas, said that seven police officers were wounded by a suspect who was barricaded. He added that the suspect died of a gunshot injury.
Chief William McManus, told reporters that the incident started when officers responded to an emergency call from the family of the suspect about a “suicide being committed” in a north San Antonio apartment complex.
McManus stated that the first officer to arrive “was shot at in his lower extremity.”
“Another officer arriving after him, or about the same time as him, was also shot,” the police chief continued. “The third officer arriving on the scene was shot as well. And finally, the fourth officer who arrived on the scene was shot, I believe that was in the upper torso.”
McManus stated that the four officers had been hospitalized for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
McManus revealed in a Facebook video that the total number of officers who were shot was seven. He did not disclose the conditions of the other three officers.
McManus stated that it was not clear from the video whether the suspect had shot himself or been hit by police bullets.
He described the suspect to be a 40-year-old man.
The suspect was arrested three times on January 18, including two arrests for assault and one for DWI. McManus stated that the suspect was on bail at the time.
McManus stated in the video that the incident lasted “several” hours.
McManus said that the four officers he originally mentioned were between four and eight-year veterans of the department.
Joseph Loredo told KENS-TV that he was studying to take an exam at the time when he heard a loud “pop” and saw helicopters flying overhead. He later said that he heard a series of shots.
“I just heard a loud pop; it was like a single pop. I didn’t think much of it and my mom is living with me so she told me to come out to the balcony because she heard a lot of noise,” Loredo said. “Sure enough, when we went out to the balcony, we heard a bunch of helicopters. And then 20 seconds after we were out there, we heard more shots. It was like two or three shots. I told my mom, ‘Hey mom, those are gunshots.'”
