Meta’s settlement of $25 million with President Trump to delete his accounts following the Capitol Insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, was described as a bribe by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).
In a statement posted on X Thursday, Warren said: “It appears to be a bribe. It sends a message to all companies that corruption is the rule of the game.”
She asked, “After Meta pays for play, what is Mark Zuckerberg expecting as a return from this investment?”
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently remained close with President Trump. He held meetings at the Florida estate of Mar-a-Lago and attended his inauguration.
The tech giant hosted a black-tie reception in honor of the President’s November election win.
On a Meta earnings conference call on Wednesday, Zuckerberg stated, “This is going to be an important year for redefining the relationship between our company and governments.”
Zuckerberg added, “We have an administration in the United States that is proud of its leading companies and prioritizes American tech wins. It will also defend our values and our interests abroad.”
He added, “I am also optimistic about the innovation and progress that can be unlocked by this.”
Zuckerberg isn’t the only billionaire who has a close relationship with Trump. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is also among the tech CEOs who support Trump’s new administration. He has donated $1 million to the inaugural fund of the Republican party and stated that he was “optimistic about his second term.”
