Polar Vortex to Deliver Dangerous Cold Across the U.S. This Weekend

The temperatures are predicted to drop dramatically over the weekend bringing dangerous conditions to many parts of the United States.

This weekend, temperatures will be below-freezing in many parts of the United States. They’ll continue to drop into the next week. Monday is also the day for two important national events: the inauguration of President-elect Trump and the college football championship.

National Weather Service (NWS), a weather service, said that the northern part of the United States will be the first to experience Arctic temperatures, starting Friday.

The Arctic Circle will send a blast of cold air over Canada on Friday night and into Saturday morning. CNN reported that the Arctic air will spread over the entire country, and temperatures could reach -40 degrees.

Beginning Thursday, snow is expected to start downwind of Lake Erie. It will then spread across western New York. Snowfall ranging from moderate to heavy is forecast for central Appalachia and parts of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

NWS forecasts that the Central U.S., Rocky Mountains, and other parts of the country will experience “a sudden change in reality” on Friday. This includes cold fronts, freezing temperatures, and brutally low wind chills. Snow showers are possible.

In the Eastern U.S., temperatures will remain very low and then return to normal for this time of year. By Saturday morning, there could be some showers and thunderstorms in the South.

As the winds shift, wildfires on the West Coast that devastated Los Angeles start to look better.

Trump’s inauguration is expected to be sunny and subfreezing on Monday in Washington, D.C. Washington is experiencing bitter cold after the largest snowstorm to hit the region in many years earlier this month.
