Tyler Perry Criticizes Insurers for Dropping Policies Amid Wildfire Risks

Published on

Tyler Perry slammed insurance companies’ “pure greed” for canceling homeowners’ policies in advance of the California wildfires.

In a post on Sunday, the director of “Divorce in the Black”, wrote: “Watching a daughter try to protect her 90-year-old parents’ house with a garden hose because their insurance had been canceled was gut-wrenching for me.”

Perry, 55, asked: “Does anyone find it appalling how insurance companies can drain billions from communities over years, and then suddenly be allowed to cancel policies for millions of people who made them rich?”

“People who paid premiums their entire lives have nothing left because of pure greed,” he wrote to his 7 million + followers.

California’s Insurance Commissioner issued a moratorium of one year on non-renewals and cancellations in areas of Los Angeles affected by wildfires. The fires have claimed lives and destroyed more than 12,000 buildings.

California officials announced last month new regulations that require insurance companies to offer coverage in areas prone to wildfires. This move was made after insurers left areas of California affected by wildfires.

Perry showed his empathy in a social media post for the victims of recent fires.

He said, “I am keeping all of you in my prayers as I try to decide what steps I should take to help as many people as possible.”
