On Thursday, President Trump said that he would follow through with his threat to impose tariffs of 25 percent on goods imported from Mexico and Canada starting on Saturday.
Trump told reporters at the Oval Office that he would announce tariffs against Canada and Mexico. He cited the influx of migrants at the southern borders, the flow of fentanyl to the United States, and the trade deficit that the U.S. had with its neighbors.
He said: “I will impose a 25 percent tariff on Canada and Mexico. We’ll have to because we have huge deficits with these countries. Those tariffs could rise or fall over time.”
Trump said that he will decide on Thursday night whether oil is included in the tariffs.
“We may or may not. We’re going to make that determination, probably tonight, on oil. Because they send us oil, we’ll see. It depends on what the price is. If the oil is properly priced, if they treat us properly, which they don’t,” Trump said.
He continued, “Look, Mexico and Canada have never been fair to us on trade.”They’ve treated us unfairly in trade and we’ll be able to make up for that very quickly because we don’t need their products.”
This action would be in line with a threat Trump made during the last days of his 2024 presidential campaign. He had threatened to impose tariffs of 25 percent on imports from Mexico – the U.S.’s top trading partner – unless Mexico curbed the flow of migrants at its southern border.
Later, he expanded this threat to include Canada as well as China.
Experts have warned that tariffs may increase prices for American consumers of certain goods.
Experts have said that an extended trade conflict would also likely cause the economies of Mexico, Canada, and the United States to suffer more long-term.
